Entrance to the area of the "Lupanare" (wolf women, red-light district), Pompeii

  • Entrance to the area of the "Lupanare" (wolf women, red-light district), Pompeii
  • Sessions were brief, hopefully, Pompeii
  • Pictures were provided to facilitate communication, Pompeii
  • Stand at entrance to Herculaneum
  • Herculaneum was deserted compared to the crush of people at Pompeii
  • Herculaneum was covered by mud and/or a pyroclastic flow (depends on who you read), so many wood objects were charred and preserved. Much harder to excavate than ash. The green area is the original beach with the arches being the boat storage areas (one acutally had a boat in it that the villagers were trying to launch). Note the depth of burial.
  • Unlike Pompeii which was a town with many business interests, Herculaneum was a resort village with a functional sewer system, thus the shallow streets with no stepping stones.
  • Area left unexcavated, showing the level of hardened mud, Herculaneum
  • Room with paintings, showing the remains of charred wood roof supports, allowing the recreation of the original ceiling structure, Herculaneum
  • Original lead pipe, Herculaneum
  • Original charred wood structure and rail (charred wood surrounded by recently added metal supports), Herculaneum
  • Casa Sanntica, the impluvium, early rainwater catchement system, Herculaneum
